Imagine you are getting a brand new car. You are very excited to get the car. You have been waiting two years to get the car. The day is almost here. You get the car! And someone has keyed up the hood.
You tell them that you are very upset that your car has been keyed up, but they just look at you blankly and tell you you still have a car that works, go out and drive.
If I wanted to ruin your day I'd go the bookstore, grab a copy, skim through it, and post as much crap as I could find, as opposed to take a main character and say they're dead, and post an LJ update about it.
I found a spoiler when I went to the WoW forums. The title of one of the threads said who dies and who kills them. At first I thought, "Someone is probably just screwing around", until I clicked the link and an image of a scanned page from the book comes up with the spoiler highlighted.

That is what being spoiled is like.

It's a mental property, and that's a gray area.
It's more like ordering a 6 course meal, and once it arrives someone says, "You know the cooks make that out of the finest dogshit."
It may cause you to not eat it, or you just don't care and eat your Dogshit Tartar regardless.
